Summary, etc. Abstract:

Background: The development of antibiotic resistance in microorganisms is a global challenge for clinicians, pharmacists and research scientists, leading to the development of new medicinal formulations that are effective and easily consumable. Discovery of new bioactive substances is a global need to combat disease and Ocimum gratissimum has been revealed to exhibit a strong potentiality in the treatment of various diseases. This study was aimed at identification of bioactive substances from the leaf extracts of O. gratissimum.

Method: The study was laboratory based, conducted at Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences Multipurpose laboratory at Bugando, Mwanza, Tanzania from 3rd to 28th April 2023. STATA was used as a statistic test for the major outcome of results.

Results/ discussion: Two compounds were determined and tested for their biological activity against gram positive and gram negative bacteria and a fungus and was shown to have about 55% activity in both bacteria and the fungus.

Conclusion: From the dried leaves of O. gratissimum collected from Kagera, Tanzania, only one of the two compounds determined demonstrated activity against both gram positive, gram negative and fungus, this suggest that the leaves of O. gratissimum can be used as an alternative for new therapies.
