Summary, etc. Abstract:

Introduction: Mumps is an acute contagious disease caused by paramyxovirus that affects human mostly characterized by pain, tenderness and swelling of the parotid gland. Mumps can also cause spontaneous abortion to women and post pubertal orchitis that may result to testicular atrophy which might lead to infertility. Data on the burden of mumps in Africa and in Tanzania, are limited. Only three published articles regarding magnitude of Mumps virus exist in Tanzania, however, none of them focused on women with spontaneous abortion necessitating the need to generate this information. This study was done to determine the seropositivity and associated factors of mumps virus IgG antibodies among women with spontaneous abortion in Mwanza Tanzania.

Methodology: A laboratory based analytical cross sectional study involving 212 achieved sera collected in between 2015 and 2019 from women with spontaneous abortion from five selected hospitals in Mwanza, was conducted from July to August 2022. Detection of mumps IgG antibodies was done by an indirect Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) kit (Vircell, S.L. Parque Technologico de la Salud, Avicena 8, Spain). Data was entered into the Microsoft excel sheet for clearing and coding then was analyzed by using Stata version 15.

Results: The median age of enrolled participants was 27 [IQR: 24-32] years. The overall seroprevalence of mumps IgG antibodies was found to be 117/212(55.19%) [95% CI: 48.39-61.80] among women with spontaneous abortion in Mwanza region. Residing in urban areas (OR: 3.23, 95% CI 1.83-5.96, P= 0.000) and increase in the number of house hold members (OR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.01-1.38, P=0.040) predicted seropositivity of mumps IgG antibodies among women with spontaneous abortion in Mwanza, Tanzania.

Conclusion: More than a half of women with spontaneous abortion in Mwanza region are Mumps IgG seropositive being predicted by residing in urban areas and increase in the number of house hold members. More studies should be done to establish Mumps IgM seropositivity and causal effect relationship among women with spontaneous abortion. Further epidemiological studies are needed to understand the wider picture of Mumps virus in Mwanza region.
