Summary, etc. Abstract:

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is associated with various factors which leads to its increased prevalence. Data on the prevalence and associated factors of Rheumatoid Arthritis are scarce in Tanzania and Sub-Saharan Africa at large despite the fact that the disease exists in our society, this necessitates the need for further research to address the true burden of RA. The study will raise the awareness of the magnitude of rheumatoid arthritis in adult patients at BMC, and the importance of early intervention this, will in turn decrease morbidity rate regarding RA in adult patients.

Objectives: The study aims to determine the prevalence of RA and associated factors among adult outpatient attending BMC clinic Mwanza-Tanzania.

Methods: This was a cross sectional hospital based study involving 138 adult outpatients attending BMC clinic which was conducted from January 2023 to May 2023. Sociodemographic and other relevant information were collected by using structured questionnaires. Blood sample were collected and detection of RA was done through rheumatoid factor test by assessing the level of rheumatoid factor in the blood. Data analysis was done by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences software (SPSS version 25.0).

Results: The study population had a median age of 32 years with interquartile range of 19 a mean age of 31.19 years and standard deviation of 13.070. The study revealed that out of 138 patients who presented with joint pain at Medical Out-patient Department (MOPD), only 42 (30.4%) 95% CI (2.23- 2.39)were confirmed to have RA. Cigarette smoking (X2=4.736, P= 0.03), alcohol drinking (X2= 58.694, P = 0.000), family history of joint disease (X2 = 58.694, P = <0.001), early life smoking exposure (X2= 15.899, P = 0.000) and increased body weight (X2= 138), P = 0.000) were significantly associated with RA positivity.

Conclusion and recommendations: About one third of adult patients attending MOPD at BMC are RA positive which is significantly associated with cigarette smoking, family history of joint disease, early life exposure (mothers smoked) and increased body weight
