Summary, etc. | Abstract:<br/><br/>Background: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy refers to a syndrome of hypertension whose clinical manifestations occur in the later half of pregnancy, which may regress after delivery. It is among one of the pregnancy complications that can result into premature delivery, fetal growth retardation, abruptio placentae and fetal death, as well as maternal morbidity and mortality. The World Health Organization estimates that one woman dies every seven minutes from complications of Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. For years this has been a threat among the maternal population henceforth stratergies to combat HDP are required to ensure mothers get to deliver their offspring under stable conditions thus mothers and fetus’ safety.<br/><br/>Objective: This study aimed at assessing the awareness of the risk factors, complications and outcome of Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy among pregnant women attending antenatal care at Bugando Medical Centre, Mwanza, Tanzania. <br/><br/>Methodology: A prospective hospital based cross sectional study was done using structured closed ended questionnaires in which all pregnant women attending antenatal care at Bugando Medical Centre were interviewed for a period of three months and data entry and analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software version 20. Data was expressed in percentage with the series of tabulations that gave the results of the study.<br/><br/>Results: Among 287 participants, 277 of them (96.5%) had good awareness on what HDP was, while 3.5% [10 participants had never heard about hypertensive disorders of pregnancy] of the participants were not aware of what pre-eclampsia is,88.8% of them were aware of the risk factors of PE while 11.2% were not aware of such risk factors. Out of all participants only 4.1% were aware of the symptoms of PE while 95.9% of them were not aware of the symptoms. Majority (N= 159;55.4%) of the participants were in the age category of 20-29 years; 225 (93.4 %) were married, 124 (43.2%) had university level of education;146(50.9%) were small scale business women (informal level of employment). Among 287 participants 191 (66.6%) were in the gestation of 20-37 weeks, 50 (17.4%) where in less than 20 weeks of gestation.<br/><br/>Conclusion: The overall knowledge about hypertensive disorders of pregnancy was good as per the results of this study. Majority of the participants enough knowledge about what hypertensive disorders of pregnancy was as well as its risk factors hence participants had good awareness about it. Factors associated with a greater proportion of good awareness on the questionnaire were higher literacy, maternal age and multiparty<br/><br/> |
