Summary, etc. | Abstract:

Background: Low Back Pain (LBP) is one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal disorders in the general population with the lifetime prevalence ranging from 68-81%.Farming is one of the occupations, which predispose farmers to low back because it involves poor working postures, lifting heavy objects and body vibrations.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, identify association risk factors and the nature of low back pain among rice farmers in Nyashishi river irrigation scheme.

Methods and materials: A cross sectional descriptive study was conducted among 82 rice farmers in Nyashishi river irrigation scheme. Adopted and modified standard Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaires was used, where it consisted of two parts, the social demographics part and the second part consisted of health and work related questions like working posture, hours of working in field per day and days spent per week. Data were processed and analyzed by using statistical package of social science version 20 (SPSS). Descriptive statistic were performed to summarize data. Categorical variable were expressed in frequency and percentage. Continuous variable were expressed as mean and their standard deviation. Cross tabulation and Chi square was used to test the association between the prevalence of low back pain and the associated risks factors.

Results: Prevalence of low back pain was very high as 78% among rice farmers and most participants were men, the nature of back pain was localized in 75% of those experienced LBP. The identified risk factors were prolonged bending, lifting heavy objects, job stress and duration of working with statistical significance (p<0.05).

Conclusion: The prevalence of LBP among rice farmers in Nyashishi river irrigation scheme is very high and most of the identified risk factors were related to poor ergonomic and job stress. These factors are modifiable hence steps should be taken as early as possible to prevent LBP development. Government should assist farmers in reducing physical effort through mechanization of farming works. Loans should be made available to local farmers to enable them to hire hands to assist them in their farming works.

Keywords: Low back pain, Rice farmers, Risk factors, Nature of Low Back Pain.
|
