Summary, etc.
Abstract:

Background: Antimicrobials consumption is the major concern currently, since existence of antimicrobial resistance. The use of antimicrobial medicines has greatly contributed to the decline in morbidity and mortality caused by infectious diseases, but these advances in treatment are being undermined by the rapidly increasing problems of antimicrobial resistance.

Methodology: The aim of this hospital based retrospective study was to determine expenditure and availability of antimicrobials at Sumve district hospital from June 2019 to May 2020. Data was collected using standardized tools adopted from WHO, entered into Microsoft excel and analysed using STATA version 16.

Results and discussion: A total of 74,493,330 Tsh was spent on purchasing medicines. A total of 27% out of all medicines cost was spent on antimicrobials. Antimicrobials consumption with a total of 15 DDD per 1000 inhabitants per day of all antimicrobials was obtained with different trend in each month. Oral antimicrobials accounted for 77% while parenteral antimicrobials account for 23%. A total of 153 day drugs were unavailable which accounts for 41%.

Conclusion: The consumption of antimicrobials was low in the hospital while cost spent on antimicrobials was high. Therefore the hospital should improve purchasing practices while at the same time controlling of antimicrobials use in the hospital.
