Summary, etc. Abstract:

Soil-transmitted helminthic (STH) infections are among the most common infections worldwide that are transmitted by eggs present in human faces contaminating the soil in areas where sanitation is poor. Main species infecting humans includes roundworm (A. lumbricoides), the whipworm (T. trichiura) and hookworms (Necator anericanus and Ancylostoma duodenale).

The WHO recommends Albendazole (400 mg) as a drug of choice for treatment of STH. Currently in Tanzania these medicine is used in Mass Drug Administration (MDA) especially in school children’s.

A Kato – Katz technique was used for the Parasitological work where by two cellophane thick fecal smears were prepared on glass microscope slides from each stool sample.

The overall prevalence for the participants with at least one of the STH was found to be 20.4%. The overall CR and FECR were 91.8% and 98.9% respectively for all STH. CR and FECR for Ascaris and Hookworm were 100% whereas for Trichiuris it was 75.5% and 96.7% respectively.
