| Summary, etc. | Abstract: <br/><br/>Background: Infant feeding options among HIV mothers is determined by different factors including social, cultural and economic factors. Studies suggest EBF and infant prophylaxis prevent HIV transmission from mother to her child; where by the mother is recommended to take ARV despite of CD4 levels.<br/><br/>Study objective: To asses infant feeding practices and associated factors among HIV infected mothers in Mwanza city. <br/><br/>Methodology: The design of the study was cross sectional, it was conducted for a period of 4 weeks. Convenient sampling procedure was used when conducting the study in 266 participants from May to June 2016. Pretested structured questionnaire was used when collecting data, where by mothers were interviewed by the researcher. Data was analyzed using STATA version 13; dependent variables number of visits to clinics, disclosure, and perception on both adequacy and transmission through breast milk, occupational status and WHO clinical stage. Independent variables includes age of the mother, age of the child, parity and education level. <br/><br/>Results: 84.59% women practiced EBF/ERF as a choice of infant feeding. Factors which were significantly associated with the infant feeding practice include marital status, ANC attendance, WHO clinical stage, perception on both breast milk adequacy and transmission of HIV through breast milk and mothers illness status during breast feeding period. <br/><br/>Conclusion: The prevalence of the recommended infant feeding practice was found to be satisfactory. <br/> |
