Summary, etc. Abstract:

Background: Cleft lip and palate are the most common congenital craniofacial abnormalities. The prevalence of otitis media with effusion, chronic otitis media and hearing loss is high in children with cleft palate (CLP). The incidence of middle ear problems and hearing loss is reported to be higher in children with cleft lip and / or palate. Hearing loss in early childhood associated with otitis media with effusion may result in impaired speech, language and even cognitive development (1). This study aimed at determining the prevalence of middle ear effusion and its clinical presentations in children with cleft lip and/or palate among in patients and outpatients at Bugando medical centre since there is no published study on this our setting.

Objective: was to determine the prevalence of middle ear effusion and its clinical presentations in children with left lip and/or palate among in patients at Bugando medical centre.

Methodology: This was a cross sectional descriptive study, consent to attend the children was obtained from their parents or caretakers. Social dermographic data were gathered and examination of the ear using otoscope and tympanometre was done. Data was entered and analysed using STATA version 12.0 software.

Results: The study involved 42 patients with cleft lip and /or palate of which 54.76% were male and 45.24% were female. The age group of 0-6 months had the majority of the participants.
