Summary, etc. | Abstract: <br/><br/>Background: In Africa herbal medicines are often used as primary treatment for Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) related problems. Concurrent use of traditional herbal medicines (THM) with antiretroviral drugs (ARV) is widespread among HIV infected patients. However, the extend of THM use in not known in most settings in Sub-Sahara Africa. This study aimed at determining the prevalence and factor for the use of tradition herbal medicines among HIV AIDS patients on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) attending at Magu District Hospital. <br/><br/>Methodology: A cross sectional descriptive study using structured and non-structured questionnaires on 343 patients who were 18 years old and above with antiretroviral therapy attending at Magu District Hospital between May and June 2018 was done. Data was collected on social demographic characteristics, use of traditional herbal medicines and factors for the use of traditional herbal medicines.<br/><br/>Results: A mean age of 42.29 years was found with 39.7% males and 60.3% females 31.2% of patients had not been to school, 86.6% were Christians and a large group of patients were at age category of 18-45 years. The prevalence of THM use was 9.9%, males were higher users compared to females (10.3% and 9.7%) respectively. The p value 0.848, patients who were <45 years, was high compared to those who were >45 years (p value 0.556).<br/><br/>Conclusion: The prevalence of THM use among participants on HAART at Magu District hospital was high. <br/> |
