| Summary, etc. | Abstract: <br/><br/>Background: Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is the most lethal malformation among infants and among the major problems affecting public health worldwide. It is the most common type of heart disease amongst children. The global prevalence of CHD among newborns ranges approximately 3.7 to 17.5 per 1000 newborns which accounts for 30-45% of all congenital defects. CHD is responsible for 12 deaths per 1000 live births for pre-term infants <37 weeks of gestation age. There are 1.6 million live births in Tanzania annually. With the prevalence of 3.7 – 15.5 per 1000 live births. You would expect that 5900 – 28000 children would be born with congenital heart disease annually. <br/><br/>Methods: A retrospective hospital based study was done in 43 patients files. All data were collected using medical files at Bugando medical centre medical records from 1st January 2012 to 31st December 2012. Data collected was demographic data, clinical presentation, documented risk factors, management and outcome. <br/><br/>Results: During the study period there were 2,468 pediatric admissions and 43 patients were newly diagnosed with congenital heart disease, so the incidence was 1.74%. Age of the patients ranged from 0.5 to 96 months, with a mean age ± standard deviation of 22.36 ± 26.94 months. <br/><br/>Conclusion: In this study frequency was 1.74% which is the same as the world prevalence. Proper documentation is needed with emphasis on any history of exposure to known risk factors. <br/> |
