| Summary, etc. | Abstract: <br/><br/>Background and objective: Herpes simplex virus types -2 (HSV-2) infection is among sexually transmitted infection (STI) and common of genital ulcer disease (GUD) worldwide. Despite its importance there is limited information regarding the magnitude of this infection in this setting. This study aimed at determining seroprevalence of HSV-2 IgG antibodies among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected and general population in Mwanza city, Tanzania. <br/><br/>Methodology: A cross sectional study using 87 achieved sera from HIV infected population and 174 sera from general population was conducted between July and August 2016. Socio-demographic and other relevant information were collected using structured data collection tool. HSV-2 IgG Rapid Test Kit (colloidal Gold) was used to detect specific HSV-2 IgG antibodies. Data were analysed by using STATA version 11 software according to the objectives of the study. <br/><br/>Results: The median age was 34 (IQR: 27-38) and 28 (IQR: 23-36) for HIV and general population respectively. Majority of the participants were female to male ratio of 2: 1 in both groups. Seroprevalence of specific HSV-2 IgG antibodies were found to be significantly higher among HIV infected individuals as compared to non HIV infected individuals [23% (95% CI: 14-32) vs. 12.6% (95% CI: 19-32, p=0.02]. The prevalence was also found to be significantly higher among HIV infected women compared infected women from general population (p=0.019). <br/><br/>Conclusion: High seroprevalence of HSV-2 among HIV infected group highlights the potential health impact of HSV-2 among HIV infected individuals. <br/> |
