| Summary, etc. | Abstract: <br/><br/>Background: Pre-eclampsia is hypertension of at least 140/90 mmHg recorded on two separate occasions at least four hours apart and in the presence of at least 300mg protein in a 24 hour collection of urine arising denovo after the 20th week of gestation in a previously normotensive women and resolving completely by the sixth week postpartum. <br/><br/>The aim of the study is to determine prevalence of PE and obstetric outcomes among pregnant women delivering in Bugando medical centre Mwanza. <br/><br/>Methodology: A prospective study of 384 pregnant women delivering at Bugando medical centre between 1st August 2011 and 1st September 2011 done, relevant data was obtained using checklist. Data was analyzed using SPSS 17.0 computer version and results presented. <br/><br/>Resulting: The study show the prevalence of pre-eclampsia pregnant women delivering at Bugando medical centre was 13%. Obstetric outcomes were preterm delivery (<37 weeks), caesarean section, small for date, low Apgar score babies and eclampsia. <br/><br/>Conclusion and recommendation: In conclusion we have demonstrated that prevalence of pre-eclampsia at Bugando medical centre was 13%, and the incidence of PE was found to be high prime gravid and pregnant women aged <20 years. There was a trend towards higher rates of preterm delivery (<37 weeks), caesarean section, small for date, low Apgar score babies and eclampsia. Pre-eclampsia is a problem at Bugando medical centre that need special attention as elsewhere. <br/><br/> |
