Summary, etc. | Abstract:

Background: This approach is a combination of 5S (sort, set, shine, standardize and sustain), Kaizen (Continuous improvement) and TQM (Total Quality Management). It originated in the operational management in Japanese manufacturing industry. It is a process to secure “Productivity” of monitoring work.

Objective: The objective of this study is to assess the implementation of 5S KAIZEN-TQM in the management of health centre pharmacies in Nyamagana, Mwanza.

Methodology: Cross sectional involving 9 health centre pharmacies in Nyamagana district.

Results: Implementation of 5S was at an average of 55.0% in all 9 health centre that were involved in this study. All 9 health centres visited had an average of 49.5% KAIZEN assessment. To all 9 health centres visited, 4 had less than 50% assessment and the remaining 5 health centres having more than 50% KAIZEN assessment. An average of 57.8% on S4 (standardize and 30% on S5 (sustain) were obtained.

Conclusion: There should be more emphasis on the practice of 5S KAIZEN-TQM approach in health institutions to the lowest level. Evaluation on its application in facilities with low space and even less number of personnel should be done to improve healthcare services provision.
|
