Summary, etc. | Abstract:

Background: Blood transfusion is one of the most frequently performed practices in hospitals. A single unit of donated blood can save lives and improve outcome in more than one patient through providing appropriately the requested blood components. Hospitals are required by accrediting agencies to perform blood utilization review to monitor appropriateness in utilization of blood and its components. However there was limited information in Tanzania on the pattern and how blood and blood products are utilized, also the extent to adherence on effective provision of requested blood and blood products was not documented.

Objective: This study aimed at determining the pattern of utilization of blood and blood products at BMC. This study was also aimed at determining the laboratory effectiveness to provision of requested blood components.

Material and methods: This was a cross sectional study which was conducted from June to August 2018. Patient’s transfusion request forms were reviewed and then patients demographics and all clinical information such as; indication of transfusion, whole blood or blood component requested, department and units requested were noted down into a well prepared data collection form for the study.

Results: Blood units issued were 382 units, whole blood was the most utilized 94.9%, followed by PRBC 3.6%. The maximum supply of blood was to the departments of medicine and general surgery, anemia was the most common indication/diagnosis required blood transfusion followed by surgery, the laboratory was effective by 97.7% on issuing appropriately requested blood/ blood component. Most of the request for whole blood 91.8% were processed and issued out on time while issuing was delayed on majority of the requests for blood components 55.6%.

Conclusion: There is irrational utilization of blood in our setting

Recommendations: The hospital blood bank should extend its service to include regular provision of blood components especially PRBC and plasma, this will reduce delays observed in blood components transfusion services to patients and mostly will make more patients benefit from one unit of donated blood …….. study should be conducted, in our settings there should be periodic review on how blood and blood component are appropriately utilized.

|
