| Summary, etc. | Abstract: <br/><br/>Background: Diabetic mellitus refers to a group of common metabolic disorder that shares the characteristics of hyperglycemia; it is associated with abnormalities in carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism and results in chronic complications including neuropathic disorders. Tanzania has 1.7 million people with diabetes and the number predicted to be double by year 2030. <br/><br/>Objectives: To asses’ non adherence of anti-diabetic medicine and associated factors among diabetes mellitus patients attending clinic at Kasahunga, Kibara and Ikizu Health centers. <br/><br/>Methods: A retrospective cross sectional study was carried out assess prevalence of non-adherence to anti-diabetic medicines. Patients were interviewed through structured through questionnaires and data analysed through SPSS version 20. <br/><br/>Results: Two hundred and fourteen patients were included in this study 62.1% were female and 37.9% were male, the age range of participants was 51-60 years, majority of participants were self-employed 38.4 and 81.3 were married. Twenty nine percent of patients were non adherence to the anti-diabetic medicines and they mentioned the following factors as the cause of non-adherence, 23.4% mentioned forgetfulness, and 12.1% reported feeling worse after using drugs and 17.8% skipped their prescribed medicines because they were using traditional medicines which they thought were effective. Also 18.7% were self-reported that high cost and out of stock of drugs cause them to skip taking drugs and 10.7% were skipped taking drugs due to travelling. Older patients (51-60) years old had good adherence. Adherence to anti-diabetic medication was found to be 71%.<br/><br/>Conclusion: From this study, some factors which were forgetfulness, feeling worse, feeling better, higher cost and out of stock, travelling and use of traditional medicine were found to be contributory factors to non-adherence.<br/><br/>Recommendation: Clear and proper information should provide to patient on how to use anti diabetic medicines, and further large study can be conducted to find medication with more side effects.
