Summary, etc. | Abstract:

Background: Diarrhea is a leading cause of childhood morbidity and mortality particularly in developing countries where an estimated five million deaths occur each year in children under five years of age. The unjustified use of medicines to treat simple episodes of diarrhea continues to divert attention, efforts and available resources away from appropriate treatment.

Objective: The objective of this study is to assess the measure taken by mothers of children aged 0-59 months to manage acute diarrhea in Nyamagana district.

Methods: A cross-section descriptive study design was conducted in Nyamagana district Mwanza. Specifically the study focused on the measures taken by mothers when their children are having acute diarrhea and the outcomes of the medication used.

Results: A semi-structured questionnaire was used for data collection through which a total 384 mothers were interviewed. Most of the mothers (215, 56%) presented their children to be hospital after they had been exposed to acute diarrhea. Among those that took their children to the hospital most of them were given metronidazole (93, 24.2%) and their rate of compliance was convincing 169 (44%), mothers who did not opt for hospital used various measures.

Conclusion: Nyamagana district is facing the same problems in effective diarrhea management as in other developing parts of Tanzania. The study shows that prescriptions of antibiotics is still too frequent and anti-diarrheal drugs are still widely used.
|
