Summary, etc. | Abstract:

Background and objective: Typhoid fever caused by ingestion of contaminated food and water with salmonella typhi and paratyphi is a major health problem in developing countries. However. Information on its prevalence among adult febrile patients is scarce. The main aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of typhoid fever in the patients attending Sengerema Designated district hospital, Mwanza region Tanzania.

Methods: A cross sectional hospital- based study involving 100 adult febrile patients was conducted at Sengerema designated district hospital from June to August 2018. Sociodemographic and other relevant information were collected by using pre tested structured data collection tool. Blood for culture and stool for salmonella stool antigen test was collected. Blood culture was conducted as per Bugando medical Centre standard operating procedures while while salmonella stool antigen was done as per manufacture instructions. Data was analyzed using STATA version 13 software as per study objectives.

Results: the mean age of enrolled participants was 44.6±22.4. Years with mean temperature of 38.3±0.5 Celsius. The most common reported symptoms were headache 71(71%), joint pain 55(55%) and myalgia 33(33%). Of 100 recruited febrile adults tested for typhoid fever only 2(2%, 95% CI: 1.0-4) were positive for salmonella stool antigen test.

Conclusion: the study has shown that majority of fever among adults who attend Sengerema designated district hospital are not caused by salmonella infection. Inclusion of routine diagnosis of other possible causes of febrile illnesses in routine diagnosis is recommended.
|
