| Summary, etc. | Abstract:<br/><br/>Background: In recent years voluntary testing in combination with pre-testing and post-testing counselling has become increasingly important at national and international preventive effort of HIV/AIDS. The National HIV Counselling and Testing Campaign to mobilize more people to be tested and determine their HIV sero-status was launched on July 14th 2007. While so far more than 3 million people have tested in all districts of the country, the campaign also served to augment the scope and scale of other intervention components of the national response. The areas that have benefited from the campaign include advocacy, general behaviours change communication, community mobilization and reduction of stigma, strengthening of laboratory services and training of health care workers. The aim of the study is to determine the knowledge, attitude and practice of the parents towards Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) for HIV/AIDS to their pre-primary school children and implementation of health intervention in Bugogwa and Sangabuye wards in Illemela district, Mwanza region. <br/><br/>Methods: The study will employ both quantitative and qualitative designs. The quantitative community based cross sectional study will be conducted on the sample size of 191 parents who have pre-primary school (below six years of age) in Bugogwa and Sangabuye wards, in Illemela, Mwanza region. A multi-stage cluster sampling technique will be used to obtain the study participants. Data will be collected by using interviewer-administered questionnaires. Parents will be asked on knowledge, attitudes and their practice towards VCT for HIV/AIDS to their children. Using SPSS version 17, univariate and multivariate analysis will be performed to determine the knowledge, attitude and practice towards VCT. Qualitative study design will be employed to expand on obtaining knowledge on VCT. A total of 47 individual parents will be interviewed from all two wards. The information will be obtained using coded and categorized for content analysis. The ethical approval will be obtained from CUHAS Research Ethics Committee.<br/><br/>Results: Out of 191 parents participated in the study, 40/191 (20.9%) have the knowledge and they practice towards VCT to their pre-primary school children. The knowledge was high to parents of age group below 25 years 11 (27.5%) among 40 parent, Bugogwa ward had high knowledge with 31 parents (77.5%) out of 40 parents. Also, majority of them had primary level of education 33 (82.5%) had highest in Sukuma tribe with 20 parents (50%) <br/><br/>Conclusion: Parents knowledge, attitude and practice towards VCT to their pre-primary school children was low in these two wards. Parents who practice VCT services to their children were not to reason of voluntarily knowing the status, but also with other different reasons which were not related to VCT services. Also, parents of these wards, they know VCT services were for adults who practicing sex. So. Education on VCT and availability of service to children are highly needed.<br/> |
