| Summary, etc. | Abstract:<br/><br/>Background: Female infertility occurs in about 37% of all infertile couples and its cause remains an elusive one. This study aimed at studying the medical causes of infertility as is crucial for reducing the incidence of infertility and for improving its clinical management. This was done by investigating the hormonal and radiological profile of reproductive-aged women attending Bugando Medical Centre (BMC) with complains of infertility with which was yet to be studied. <br/><br/>Objectives: To describe the hormonal and radiological profile of reproductive aged women attending infertility clinic at Bugando Medical Centre. <br/><br/>Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used to recruit 280 participants between the ages of 19 and 45 years, who presented to the infertility clinic at BMC between March 2022 and February 2023. The participants were interviewed using a structured questionnaire to collect demographic and clinical data. Additionally, hormonal assays (Follicular Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Oestrogen, Prolactin and Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and radiological investigations (Trans-Vaginal ultra-sound (TVS) and Hysterosalpingpgraphy (HSG) were conducted evaluate the hormonal and radiological profile of the participants. The prevalence of hormonal abnormalities and radiological abnormalities were calculated. STATA version 13 was used to analyze the data in order to meet the study’s objectives. <br/><br/>Results: 48.9% of women had hormonal abnormalities with hyperprolactinemia being the most common hormonal abnormality (20%), while 34.3% of women had radiological abnormalities with PCOS being the most common abnormality (31.8%), 33.4% of women had normal for both radiological and hormonal profiles. <br/><br/>Conclusion: The study findings reveal significant proportions of hormonal and radiological abnormalities among women with complaints of infertility, with majority having hormonal abnormalities. A notable percentage of women exhibited normal radiological and hormonal profile, indicating that their infertility may be attributed to factors beyond the scope of our assessments. <br/><br/> |
