As a breast medical oncologist practicing in a hybrid academic-community cancer
center system, I often receive questions on how I would manage a particular patient
with triple-negative breast cancer or what would be my next treatment regimen in
the setting of metastatic triple-negative disease. I felt that a practical handbook that
could assist clinicians in managing triple-negative breast cancer patients in clinic
could fill a special need.
This guide is designed for the practicing oncologist, fellow in training, and other
healthcare professionals who are looking for a summary of the current thinking on
the diagnosis, treatment, and management of triple-negative breast cancer. The content is in the form of review articles. Each chapter includes clinical pearls, or key
messages, to assist providers in the multidisciplinary management of this disease.
This important handbook covers the pathologic evaluation, clinical features,
genetics, imaging, and surgical management of triple-negative breast cancer. There
are also evidence-based reviews of the different treatment modalities used to treat
this disease, including radiation therapy, adjuvant therapy, and neoadjuvant chemotherapy for early-stage disease and chemotherapy treatment for metastatic disease.
A look to ongoing developments in molecular profiling and emerging new data on
targeted therapy is included. The specific issues that face both young women and
elderly with triple-negative breast cancer are highlighted.
I would like to sincerely thank all the authors who are leaders in this field for
donating their time and expertise to create this valuable tool. It is my hope that this
book will help guide clinicians in their daily real-world practice of managing and
treating patients with triple-negative breast cancer.
