Abstract:
Background: The perinatal mortality rates are six times higher in twin pregnancies than singleton pregnancies, therefore antenatal management and safe delivery of twin pregnancies are critical issues in obstetrics. This study aimed at providing data on the proportion of twin deliveries at BMC in Mwanza and an insight on the foetal outcomes in relation to their modes of delivery.
Objectives: To determine the prevalence of twin delivery and their outcome from 2021-2023 at BMC, Mwanza Tanzania.
Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study that was conducted at Bugando Medical Centre, among all twin deliveries recorded between Jan 2021 to Dec 2023. Data was collected through an electronic health management system and through a questionnaire to determine the prevalence and the outcome of their deliveries. Data was analysed using SPSS v25, frequency, and percentage was used to evaluate baseline demographic
Results: A total of 185 women who delivered twins were included in this study. In this study, the prevalence of twin delivery was 2.22 %. However, there was 67.05% history of caesarean section. The most common cited birth outcome was low birth weight which accounted for 43.73%.
Conclusion: Accurate and timely twin delivery information coupled with a rapid response by the government and other stakeholders is essential in empowering community members to make informed choices in the community. Qualitative studies should explore the more risk factors and facilitators of poor birth outcomes following twin delivery.
