Abstract:

Background information: Cervical cancer is preventable through human papilloma virus(HPV) vaccination yet the leading cause of death among women in developing countries including Tanzania. It is important to understand the level of awareness about HPV vaccine in developing the strategies for an effective intervention. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and perception of HPV vaccine among female undergraduate university students at CUHAS.

Methodology: A cross sectional study was conducted at Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences using simple random sampling technique. The study involved students aged from 18 to 25 years and above 26 years of age with total of 300 participants. Data were collected using self-administered, structured questionnaires and analyzed using STATA® 13 (Statistical Corporation, College Station, TX, US).

Results: Most participants (95%) had knowledge regarding HPV. Majority of participants showed poor perception(60.3%) regarding HPV.

Conclusion: There is good level of knowledge and poor perception about Human papilloma virus among female undergraduate’s university students. Despite the good knowledge some students still have setbacks on knowledge regarding HPV. Effective information, education and communication strategies are required to improve the level of knowledge and perception of these women.
