Abstract:
Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by elevated level of blood sugar due to absolute or relative deficiency of insulin action or secretion. The most common is type 2 diabetes mellitus which usually occur in adults when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn’t make enough insulin. Diabetes is now considered a major chronic health problem affecting large number of people in both developed and developing countries. Determining the prevalence of undiagnosed prediabetes, DM and associated risk factors among office workers in Magu district is crucial for the prevention of the disease and its complication.
Objective: The purpose of the study was to determine the prevalence of undiagnosed prediabetes, DM and associated risk factors among office workers in Magu district Mwanza, Tanzania.
Methods: The study was cross-sectional study and it was conducted at public and private offices in Magu district, Mwanza Tanzania. Data was collected by using self-administered close ended structured questionnaire adopted from previous conducted study and modified to suit the study population.
Results: Among the respondents the prevalence of undiagnosed prediabetes, diabetes mellitus among office workers in Magu district was 4.7% and 2.4% respectively and among risk factors associated with prevalence of undiagnosed prediabetes, diabetes mellitus only age was statistical significant in this study.
