Abstract:

Objective: To determine the level Knowledge and Practice of Body mechanics as an Intervention Towards Work Related Musculoskeletal Disorders Among Medical Attendants and Nurses at Bugando Medical Centre Mwanza, Tanzania.

Study Design: hospital based community based study conducted involving participants randomly selected from BMC.

Settings: This study was conducted within the Bugando Medical Centre (BMC) premises in Mwanza, North-western of Tanzania.

Primary Outcome: The outcomes in this study were the level of knowledge and practice of body mechanics among medical attendants and nurses at BMC.


Analytical Methods and Data Presentation: Through software application SPSS version 20.1 frequencies and percentages was obtained, while pie charts, tables and figures used to represent data level of knowledge and practice of body mechanics. 95% CI were used to find the associated factors.

Results: The study revealed that 45.4% of nurses and medical had good knowledge towards body mechanics while 54.6% had poor knowledge, 51.1%of medical attendants and nurses had a good practice on body mechanics while 48.9% medical attendants and nurses had poor practice on body mechanics. There was a strong association between level of knowledge and body mechanics practicing (p value 0.00) and department of service (p value 0.004).
Conclusion: 45.4% of nurses and medical had good knowledge towards body mechanics, which is still poor while 51.1% of medical attendants and nurses had a good practice on body mechanics. And the level of knowledge was associated with the practice of body mechanics.
Recommendations: To initiate programs specific for providing education on good practice of body mechanics to the health workers.
