Abstract:
Background: Antenatal care is an important determinant of maternal mortality rate of which live of the mothers and babies depend. Tanzania is one of the ten countries contributing to 61% and 66% of the global total of maternal and newborn deaths, respectively. So this study assess the awareness and knowledge on antenatal care services among women of the reproductive age in Sekou Toure Regional Referral Hospital. Mwanza Region Tanzania.
Methodology: The study was carried out among women of reproductive age group (15-49) years is Sekou Toure Regional Referral Hospital, using a descriptive cross-sectional study design. Data was collected using structured questionnaire where by participant was asked to participate in the study by filling the concert form. A total of 200 respondents were enrolled in a study. Data was analysed using SPSS version 20 software to check for level of an awareness and knowledge and findings presented with appropriate tables.
Results: The results shows 200(100%) of the respondents were aware of antenatal care. 148(74%) had knowledge on the services carried out in ANC, majority of the respondents 127(63.5%) Had knowledge on when to start ANC and 88 (44%) had responded on more than four visit to be attended during pregnant period. High number 151 (75.5%) had knowledge on complication that will occur if a pregnant woman delay to start ANC or never attend at all throughout a pregnant.
Conclusion: There was a high level of awareness and knowledge on the services carried out in ANC. All of the enrolled population were aware of antenatal care and about two third had knowledge on the activities carried out in the provision of antenatal care. Education should be given for all girls up to secondary level as a long way to improve utilization of antenatal services.
