Abstract:
Background: Undernutrition is widely recognized as a major public health problem in developing country including Tanzania widely spread in rural and urban areas, and had been described as silent contributing up to 50% of under-five mortality. East Africa region have been reported to have a huge number of children who are undernourished. Limited resource in low income countries play a central role.
Study objective: This study aims at gaining insight on the magnitude and associated factors of Undernutrition among admitted under five children for other medical conditions at Sekou Toure hospital Mwanza Region.
Methodology: This was a prospective hospital based study which will involve children aged below five years who are admitted at Sekou Toure hospital for conditions other than Undernutrition.
The results of the study: Found out that malnutrition is one of the major challenges affecting under-five children in Tanzania. The common form of malnutrition included stunting, wasting and underweight. Children aged 39-59 months are less likely to be underweight than those aged less than twelve months. Stunting was majorly common among children of peasant farmers than those from pastoralist mothers or even those doing business.
Conclusion: The results from the analysis underscore the age groups prone to malnutrition challenges as well as the particular occupations among women that could pose a risk of malnutrition to the under – five children. This then gives a focus to policymakers in the designing of strategies aimed at combating malnutrition among children below five years
