Abstract:
Background: Globally, it approximated that 130 million infants born each year worldwide, 4 million die in the first 28 days of life. Neonatal deaths as a proportion of underfive deaths increased globally from 37% in 1990 to 44% in 2013.
Methodology: The research was Hospital based analytical based analytical retrospective cross-sectional study that was conducted at Sekou Toure regional hospital and Bugando Medical Centre located in Nyamagana district, the population of interest was 316 neonatal mortality files or records from January 2016 to December 2018. The data entry and analysis was done with an assistance of computer program that is SPSS (statistical package for social sciences).
Result and Discussion: The factors associated with neonatal mortality were influenced by several factors including house wife, pregnancy complication, neonatal gender and maternal disease like neonatal sepsis 45.67%, followed by birth asphyxia 41.34% at Sekou, Toure while at BMC then leading cause was congenital anomalies 56.47% followed by premature with low birth weight 23.15%.
Conclusion: Education and training regarding neonatal resuscitation, prevention and treatment of infections, care of pre-term babies will play a major role in decreasing the neonatal mortality.
