Abstract:

Background: Immunization is the process whereby a person is made immune or resistant to an infectious disease, typically by the administration of vaccine. Vaccines stimulate the body’s own immune system protect the person against subsequent infection or disease.

Tanzania, one of many nations in Africa with high infant mortality to preventable diseases, although the current vaccination rates for the country are satisfactory but still one child out of 5 worldwide in either not vaccinated or do not complete the vaccines according to the recommended schedule. The goal of this research is to provide information which will enable the incremental coverage of immunization for vaccine-preventable illness for children less than five years of age.

Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the barriers and motivations of immunization at reproductive and child health clinics at different dispensaries and health centers in Mbeya urban district Mbeya city.

Methodology: The study was conducted at Reproductive and Child Health clinics (RCH) Mbeya urban district in Mbeya city, involved 282 women having children under five attending dispensaries and healthy centers who selected by systemic sampling. Data collected using semi-structured questionnaire to assess the barriers and motivation of immunization and analyzed using SPSS version 20. The basic key questions was on challenges of immunization among women for their children.

Results: Among all participants 71% were not adhered to all vaccine because the vaccination schedule is too close to adhere the all vaccine. And about 70% said their distance from health facility is far, also others have poor belief on childhood immunization.

Conclusion: Most of mothers in this study they do not understand the importance immunization to their children but also the accessibility to vaccine is inadequate because of distance healthy facility.
