Abstract:

Introduction: Physical inactivity has been implicated as a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. The healthy lifestyle of medical students could facilitate the formation of healthy physicians who is more likely to give effective preventive counseling to their patients. Therefore, this study was undertaken to assess the knowledge, attitude, and level of the physical activity among the medical students.

Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted amongst 113 eligible tenth semester medical undergraduate students. A questionnaire was used to collect the data. The data were fed and coded in Epi Info software of World Health Organization and analyzed using SPSS 17.0.

Results: Knowledge regarding different types of exercise was very low among the study participants. Only 58.4% of the students were aware of the recommended level of the physical activity but all 100% were aware of the benefits of it in primary prevention of hypertension, 98.2% in primary prevention of stroke and coronal heart disease 96.6% in diabetes and fairly 60.2% in prevention of breast and colon cancer. The attitude of the participants toward the physical activity was favorable, 78.8% reported to like doing exercise, 90% knew the need of exercise in their life, and 85.5% were interested in doing exercise in the future. The 59.8% reported they cannot figure time in their daily schedule and 28.8% satisfied with their life without exercise, other 28.7% being lazy and poor self-motivation being the barriers not involving in exercise, the perception regarding physical activity was good. The major barriers was 61.4% it’s hardly do it any time then followed 60.4% insufficient facility and 40.6 was due to costly affair. Despite of good attitude yet they are is very low level of physical activity only 10.6% of the participant reach the recommended level of physical activity by WHO and majority 61.1% are in active and the remain 23.8% involving in physical activity but did not reach the recommended level.

Conclusion: The knowledge of the medical students regarding type of physical activity was poor and more than fifth percentage of medical students knew the recommend level of physical activity in adults. The attitude toward physical activity was favorable, but intention to exercise and awareness of the benefits of exercise are not related to participation in physical activity. Most of medical student are inactive. The major barriers in adoption of physical activity found to be hardly to do it any time in their daily schedule, insufficient facility and costly affair. There is a need to provide an enabling environment for promoting the physical activity amongst them so that can inculcate the same in their patients.
