Abstract:
The aim of this study was to assess the achievement of PMTCT of HIV option B plus at Nkasi district in Rukwa Tanzania so as to know whether it tallies with the WHO goal of reducing the number of children newly infected with HIV by 90% and a MTCT rate of HIV less than 5% by the year 2015.
A descriptive retrospective study was conducted at Namanyere DDH from 19th August to 19th September 2015. All files of pregnant women tested HIV positive were identified. Data on socio-demographic, husband HIV status, PMTCT options, baby’s HIV status at birth, first visit and 18 month, duration in PMTCT, prenatal and postnatal ART or prophylaxis to mother and child collected.
There were 135 cases. Option A were 49 (36.3%), whereas option B plus were 86 (63.7%). Also 39 male partners (28.9%) had their HIV status recorded as positive. 10.2% of babies in option A and 4.7% of babies in option B plus were born with HIV infection. HIV status of 8.1% of babies was not recorded. 22.2% of cases were LTFU. Conclusively, by employing option B plus the rate of MTCT is 4.7%, below 5%, the standard put by WHO to be achieved by the year 2015.
It is worthwhile to recommend PMTCT option B plus to continue as means to reduce the prevalence of HIV in developing countries. Critically, more achievement of PMTCT option B plus could be attained if data recording would be improved and number of LTFU eliminated.
