Abstract:

Background: there is increased rate of isolating extended spectrum beta- lactamase (ESBL) – producing enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-PE) from health care and community associated infections in Mwanza city and Bunda town council, Tanzania. Despite the high ESBL- PE carriage among street children residing in mwanza streets and the environment they mostly play, the role played by marabou stork birds with a habit of scavenging on food leftover in dumps, in cross transmission of ESBL-PE is not known. This study determines the magnitude of faecal ESBL-PE carriage among Marabou stork birds and their antimicrobial susceptibility profiles.

Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted from May to July, 2018 among scavenging birds(Marabou stork birds) in Mwanza city and Bunda town council Tanzania a total of 361 Marabou stork birds stool samples was collected from different dumping sites in clean containers and transported to CUHAS laboratory for processing according to SOP’s on the same day. MacConkey agar supplemented with 2ug/ml of cefotaxime and chromID (Merieux manufacture) ESBL was used to screen and presumably confirm ESBL-PE. Data was analyzed using STATA version 13 computer software.

Results: 338 were culture positive of which 102(30%) were ESBL- producer. Escherichia coli formed the majority of the isolates (n=96/102, 94.1%). The prevalence was higher among samples obtained from Mwanza city than samples obtained from Bunda town Council.

Conclusion: the carriage of ESBL-PE is high among Marabou stork birds found in Mwanza city and Bunda town council. Further genomic study to investigate relatedness of isolates from environment, clinical samples and animal samples are encourage
